What is TIG Welding?

TIG stands for Tungsten Inert Gas Welding, also known GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding). The TIG welding process is performed by feeding welding rods slowly into the weld puddle to fuse metals together. This technique requires both hands to be used, with one hand holding the welding rod, and the other holding the torch and producing the arc. This is a much finer and more time-consuming process than MIG welding, where you continuously feed a wire electrode. The process is commonly used when a precise weld is needed and is mostly used when welding stainless steel, copper, aluminium and titanium.
